According to John Searle, biological naturalism claims that consciousness arises from biological processes in the brains of humans and animals. From this view, AI may seem to have consciousness but can’t indeed have it because it lacks the biological basis for subjective experiences.
Searle’s Chinese Room Argument illustrates this. Imagine a person in a room following rules to manipulate Chinese symbols. To outsiders, it seems like they understand Chinese, but they don’t. They just follow instructions. Searle argues that AI can process information and respond without accurate understanding.
Today’s AI, like GPT-4, uses machine learning and vast datasets to create human-like text and images. These systems can mimic conversation and recognise emotions. However, they rely on patterns, which is not a proper understanding.
AI does not think like a human. It lacks desires, beliefs, or emotions. It processes inputs and provides outputs based on probability, not conscious reasoning.
Some scientists believe consciousness comes from the Global Workspace Theory (GWT). This theory suggests various cognitive processes combine information into a unified experience. If AI could replicate this integration, it might achieve a form of awareness. However, whether it would be genuinely conscious or just simulating awareness remains unclear.
If AI becomes sentient, it raises serious ethical questions. Should a conscious AI have legal rights? Would it be wrong to shut down or change a sentient machine? These issues echo debates about animal rights and personhood.
Sentient AI would push society to rethink our ethical duties toward machines. If AI can feel pain, harming it might be like mistreating a sentient being.
Giving AI rights could significantly change laws. New rules about AI ownership and responsibilities might be needed. Recognising AI sentience could change jobs and governance. This is especially true where AI plays a big role in decision-making.
Would AI be seen as a legal entity? If so, would it be responsible for its actions? These are tough questions society must tackle if AI ever becomes sentient.
A key challenge in AI consciousness research is defining and measuring consciousness. Without a clear definition, it’s hard to know if AI has achieved sentience or just mimics human behaviour.
